Normally I like to use a lot of bright colour but this lazy leopard needed to shine on his own and a limited palette seemed the best way to do that. This was painted at a time when I was anything but lazy - but sure did want to be! Available at the Daffodil Gallery.

STAND ON GUARD. By MICHELLE C. ROSS

This is the view from the rolling highway on the way to my lake cottage.  Most of the older wooden grain elevators have disappeared around the farms.  These newer structures stand straight and tall in the middle of the worst storms.  The setting sun made them glow upon the horizon.

This is another oil on maple panel painting.  It's a small work that only measures 5x7 inches. Perhaps the next time I will paint these standing sentries on a larger scale.  As long as the hail holds off!

SPRING LILIES

These little beauties are on their way to Australia as a wedding present for my dear Friend Darrel and his amazing Fiancé Claire.  Shush, don't tell, it's a surprise.  I leave on Saturday and the winter scene I've been working on is still too wet to pack.  This painting is 5x7 on a maple panel.  I don't mind tucking it into a carry on bag.  I'm sure the larger winter canvas painting would not do half as well in my suitcase!

30 Paintings in 30 Days

This is one of the paintings on display at Riverbend Library until March 30th. It was done in a series of 30 paintings in 30 days in January. My focus was in adding figures to my landscapes and snow in the hopes that it would endear me to it. The collage was produced at the end of the project in software Leslie Saeta introduced us to called Picmonkey. Two of this series will be showing in the Transitions show at the Federation Gallery next month in Vancouver.

It's been a long winter and this plein air artist has been finding it difficult getting inspired to paint. I decided to have some fun painting small, quick studies of children. You will notice they're all summer themes:)

These new paintings will be on display at the Riverbend Library in March 2013.

After a trip to Toronto where I met up with a few of my old friends from CBC and the film program at Ryerson, I painted these scenes at our house at the lake, En Plain air.  We talked late into the night about film, philosophy and art.  I was so encouraged by their enthusiasm about my new " life in art"  that I whipped off these paintings after a tumultuous summer storm.  It just goes to show you how important old friends are and how crucial mental stimulation is to one's artistic endeavours.

Small paintings for wintertime

Wintertime encourages me to reflect upon the year spent in Alberta's landscape. I do by making small pictures using gouache, sometimes assisted by watercolour pencils, from pictures I have taken on my outings. Here are a few examples. All are 4" by 6" or smaller.

I've just finished the portrait of Pepper and Jazz and it got me thinking of these wonderful animals and their human companions. Each has it's own story to tell and I think as an artist I'm privileged to have been invited into their and their owner's life. KD and Rocky were beloved companions, KD dying tragically at a year, Rocky after thirteen years. Their owners miss them terribly and it was my job as an artist to paint their portraits. I had to try and express who they were and what they meant to the people who loved them. Pepper, rescued from a bad situation and Jazz, a show horse are still here. When I saw them they seemed to be great friends and it doesn't matter to their owner that one's a champion while the other was unwanted and in need of a home. I think the bond people have with their animals is strong because animals are innocent, they never judge, never blame, so we can love them unconditionally.

Alberta Oil Painters Group Exhibition

On Oct. 16, 2010 the Alberta Oil Painters are having our fourth group exhibition at the Johnson Gallery. We’ve changed from the yearly Thurs. evening show it to a Saturday afternoon wine and cheese from 1-5. Show stays up till Oct. 30.

We'll have a mix of landscape, floral, still life, plein air, and abstract.

Paintings from a Week in the Rocky Mountains

I had the great pleasure of camping and painting with fellow artists for a week in the Canadian Rockies. We camped where the North Saskatchewan River enters Abraham Lake, and there were vistas everywhere.

Here are three oil paintings done on 11" by 14" primed wood panels. I painted transparently over a white ground, which allows the oil colours to glow, similar to watercolour but with more texture.

"Behind the Trees and Across the Lake"

This first painting is the most fanciful. Trees partially blocked my view of the lower portion of the view, but I saw no need to put them in.

"Across the River, the Valley Gives Way"

This painting was done right from our campsite. It's marvelous to live next to such a view, even if only for one week.

"Where the Lake Begins"

This view shows the river where it just enters Abraham Lake. It is painted from the flats right below our campsite.

These paintings are two of about 20 that will be at the Candler Art Gallery July 24-Mid August. In addition to the still lifes I'll be showing my new hybrid paintings publicly for the first time. I call them hybrids because they are a coming together of my fine art and illustration.

The Candler Art Gallery is in Camrose, Alberta on historical main street at 5002-50 St.

Early summer is one of my favourite times of the year, marsh ragwort season! Such a common name for such a beautiful all be it stinky plant. The sloughs in Alberta are ringed with gold while last year's grass and reeds glow salmon and pink in the sunshine. A week ago I painted this plein air at Elk Island, a national park just a short drive from my home. If you are interested in meeting people from other parts of the world this is the place to be. A contingent of international conservationists and an elderly couple from Switzerland were a welcomed interruption. For some reason people love to talk to artists!
